Happy re-use and recycling!!!

    Hi there,

I’m desperately trying to join your group. I’ve got a free cycle account, and have made a yahoo profile god knows how many times to try and join this group but am not getting anywhere. Any ideas where I might be going wrong…

    Thanks

    Will

    • socialmedia

      Hi Will,

Sorry to hear you are having problems, to join our group you need only to have a yahoo email.

Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hackney_freecycle/ and click join this group. Fill in the form on the next page and make sure you add a comment in the box at the end about why you are joining.

      Any problems, write back.

      Good luck,

    • socialmedia

      Hello Getty,

Thanks for trying to sign up. You have to visit our posting site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hackney_freecycle/

Click on ‘Join this group’ and on the next page fill in the details. It usually takes less than a day for new members to be approved. Let me know how you get on.

      Good luck,

Hello, I am very keen to join the Hackney Freecycle group but I’m not having any luck. After clinking on the ‘join this group’ link, I synced my gmail account with Yahoo as it suggests and signed in but then it just leads me round in circles asking me to do the things I’ve already done. I haven’t been able to access any sort of form to fill in or a place to add a reason for joining. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to wait to receive some sort of confirmation?

    Many thanks,

    Hannah

    • socialmedia

      Hello Hannah,

I had a look at the sign-in area and think I can see the problem. Yes, you can sign in with Gmail, but you still need to create an account first. Go back to the sign in area and at the bottom you will see where it says ‘Don’t have a Yahoo! ID?’ so click on the button ‘Create New Account’. See you soon!!

    • Claira Le Marchand

Did you have any luck fixing this problem? as i now also have the same issue.
      Thankyou
      Claira

      • eM Lo

You have to set up an alias, and then use it to set up a profile; then request membership and wait to be approved… Let me know if that worked for you!

        • NatalieMckane

I don’t understand. What do you mean set up an alias? I am having the same problem as Claira and Hannah.

          • Captin Dingo

If you go the sync google route – Once you sync google and login on the yahoo page (use google password) there is a create alias or set up alias ‘button’ (blue I think) this opens the option to enter a username I did that then got out of the round in circles trap! Not user friendly. I only swore at my computer 17 times trying to figure it out.

        • mags

Hi, I’ve had the same problem and finding an alias that works and then the rest is incredibly time consuming. Is there not an easier way that wont put people off from contributing?
Even a ‘how-to for dummies’ in a welcome email rather than the trial and error route I’ve taken would be better…

          Thanks,
          Mags

    • socialmedia1

Hi Hannah, the reason for this is you are clicking on the wrong area on the Yahoo login page. Try clicking further down the page. Cheers

    • Eric

I’m having the same issues with this site. I wasted so much time and I’m now going to have a bonfire!

  • Mvozols

    Hi!
I’m clearly a member of the group but I am not seeing my own postings although they are obviosuly appearing because people are responding to them.

    • socialmedia

      Hi there,

Yes I have checked and your membership is still current. Perhaps you are signing in with another Yahoo ID! that is registered to your email address. Have a look and let me know.

      Cheers

  • neli

hi, i have been trying and trying some more but i cant get on to the hackney freecycle site, it keeps sending me round the houses without showing me the door.
does any one have any ideas please.

    thank u

    neli

    • socialmedia1

Hi Neli, we will be creating a special area to answer the problem you are having.

  • srscycle

Hi, I just added a new post. Do I receive a confirmation. Also how do I know I have conformed to the correct freecycle format? Is it simply just the offerred, taken, wanted?

    Thanks so much

    • socialmedia1

Hi there, new posts are moderated several times a day on a batch basis. You don’t receive a confirmation and all genuine messages are approved. You seem to got the protocols, and the more sincere and geniune, the better.

  • Laura

I ve been doing exactly the same thing – trying to join the group, but it says I have to make my profile, even if I ve already done that!

  • Marykbonett

how do I remove post as item has now been taken? Thanks

    • socialmedia1

Hi, you cannot really remove a post, it’s better to post a TAKEN message as soon as you can.

  • Sarahzbaker

I’m glad it’s not just me having difficulties joining. I did eventually but now it makes me go round in circles trying to sign in. Thought I was going potty. I try to get in using Google now but it keeps sending me to the activate email addess. Hmmmmm

  • Sophia

Hi, what’s the etiquette for choosing which of many requests for my curtains should be the winner? I just went with the first request, but that seems somehow unfair. Any thoughts?

    • socialmedia1

Sophia, it’s a tough one and there’s no right or wrong answer. Often the first request seems fairer, but there again that discriminates against those who are not online all the time. Often it’s best to leave a little while and then make a decision. Most members know that only one person will be lucky, which is why it’s always good to post a nice TAKEN message to let everyone know.

  • Claire

I have posted a couple of items offered through the yahoo group, but they are not appearing – I am not sure if I am waiting for a moderator or whether they are lost. I am a member of the group apparently, but I’ve not got any further than that.

  • Damian Pieries

Once someone has picked something up do I simply place a new posting saying it’s gone or is were another way?

    Damian

    • socialmedia1

Absolutely right Damian, post a message with TAKEN in the subject line

  • dj_vern25

A quick question – I can’t find anywhere on the Hackney freecycle site to edit an existing message. I want to change an ‘OFFERED’ item to ‘TAKEN’ so that everyone who’s emailed me about the item will know. Is the only other option to add a new message that says ‘TAKEN’, or delete the original message? The myfreecycle site (http://my.freecycle.org) has a ‘My Posts’ area which I think allows the editing of messages but I think this is a separate thing as I can’t seem to get this to sync with my Yahoo groups account?

    • socialmedia1

Hi there, you cannot edit an existing message. As you suggest, it is best to simply copy the original text and just change the subject line to TAKEN. Don’t bother trying to sync myfreecycle with Hackney Freecycle, ‘cos you can’t! Finally, if you want a message expurged from the records, write to the moderators who can do that for you. All the best.

  • Clovisss2002

    Help.
I’m a member of hackney Freecycle. It took me over a year to summon up enough persistence to work out how to join. Now I want to join the Epping Forest group and after 30 minutes of effort I have had to call it a day for tonight. And I have a science degree!! Is my Yahoo ID the same as my username? I can log in and out of Yahoo with ease but cannot even apply to reset my password as doesn’t recognise my username/email password and it’s the ones I use to get the daily digest… Any clues?
    Best wishes.

    • socialmedia1

Hi there. Epping Forest Recycle are hosted on myFreecycle and Hackney Freecycle is hosted on Yahoo Groups. So if you want to join Epping Forest you will have to create an account on myFreecycle (or use the Freecycle Facebook application). I’m sorry that I cannot understand how you can log in and out of Yahoo but it doesn’t recognise your username/password. Good luck!

this whole thing is SO user unfriendly, its such a simple idea, so just keep it simple??!

    • socialmedia1

Hi Will, the rules were made a long ago and we have very little control. However, since Hackney Freecycle was started, over 20,000 people have joined. So it can’t be that bad, just feels that way :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=711603822 Andy Kellman

I’ve tried to join this group today and it seems that people have been having the same issues I’ve been having for at least seven months. surely someone has a clear step by step method of solving this “create a profile even though you already have one” issue.

    • socialmedia1

Hi Andy, many people get caught between gmail and yahoo, it’s a bit like being caught between a rock and a hard place :) Hundreds of people seem to be able to navigate the process, however dozens fail. As with all good bug detective work, we have to understand how to recreate the problem. Can you share with us how you got to ‘create a profile even though you already have one’? Cheers

  • Angela Hodges

Hi Guys I am having the same problem…not able to view any posts, yet I am already joined to Towerhamletsfreecycle and never had any issues there. Why if you are joined to one group do you have to link your FB or Google and bloomin Yahoo accts to this site? And then not be able to access? Annoying and time consuming! :-(

    • socialmedia1

Hello Angela, all Freecycle groups are separate, so you have to join each one in turn and many have different joining requirements. Hackney Freecycle require you to say a few words about yourself, this is to stop spammers. Others groups let you straight in. Yes it is annoying and time consuming when it doesn’t work first time, but we’re here to help.

  • Jo

I wanted to join, but was totally put off by having to sign up for Yahoo, and got stuck going round in circles like other users. I don’t want to have to create yet another online account, alias, password – I just want to give away some stuff for free! Why make it so hard?

  • Agatha

Just seen all the comments about problems people are having and I sympathise! I have been a member of the Hackney group as well as other local groups for a couple of years. Hackney is listed as my ‘home group’.
I just posted an offer on the Hackney group via the MyFreecycle website and now i find i cannot go onto the Hackney group site even to see my own post. No trouble at all viewing the pages of other groups i belong to.
I’m willing to believe this is down to my own technical ignorance in some way, but there does seem to be a bit of poor (non-intuitive) design here if so many of us are having problems.
Does the Hackney group use a different system to other groups in the area??
Hope someone out there can help with this.
    Thanks,
    A

  • emily

  • Tilster

Hello. I’m really keen to join the Hackney Freecycle group. I am moving in to a new place in Hackney and have lived here for a few years. i am giving away a few things and need a few things too. Thanks so much. Tilly tilly.stasiuk@yahoo.com

  • Ian

Trying to join this group is a bloody nightmare, I now have a Yahoo account that I dont want and I still cant join. It should not be this hard to give stuff away.

  • nakinostar

Hello. Alright. I’ve been trying to unsubscribe for two weeks now. Keeps saying my Email is not registered. The daily digest option doesn’t work and my phone is bombarded my emails permanently. I have to erase 50 of them a day and it’s slowly eating into me. Can somebody please sort me out, like an administrator or something ? I feel like crying.
